Learning Mentors work with young people to remove barriers to Learning by:
- Listening to their views
- Help them manage pressures in their lives
- Encourage them to achieve
- Raise their self-confidence
- Encourage them to be more self-sufficient
- Develop hidden talents
- Produce a plan of action to work towards agreed goals
- Review and change the plan regularly
- Support them to organise their time
- Help them understand the work they have to do
These barriers can involve things things such as:
- Bereavement/Loss
- Friendship difficulties
- Bullying
- Low self esteem
- Anger issues
- Worries about translations e.g. – primary to secondary school
- Anxieties of any kind
After referral, we will work together on:
- One to one mentoring
- Group work – focusing on particular issues e.g. Friendship group
- Supporting new children and transition work
- After school clubs and lunch – time activities
- Study skills work
- Reading groups
- Hotshots – relaxation and emotional education
In addition to this we have a selection of ‘self-help’ books covering a wide range of topics that you may borrow. The themes are:
- Families including divorce/separation
- Bereavement including family, friends and pets
- Caring/adoption
- Emotions
- Bullying
- Relationship and Friendships
- Behaviour
- Health and safety
- Puberty
- Special needs
All books can be borrowed by parents and are for children rather than information for parents
